Wheelchair Bound and Unable to Exercise

By October 30, 2012

I am 55 years old and about 20 pounds overweight. I am unable to exercise because I am wheelchair bound. I eat very little, OJ and 1/2 bran muffin for breakfast, Slim fast diet drink for lunch and a Healthy Choice frozen meal for dinner, but the weight is still not coming off. Help! – Joanne

Dear Joanne,

I would love to help, but unfortunately, I don’t have enough specific information about you and your situation to give detailed advice. It sounds like you are feeling frustrated and disheartened, but there is always hope!

I don’t know the extent of your disabilities, but if you have use of your upper body, there are definitely exercises you can do to build muscle tissue. And more muscle means an improved metabolism, in addition to being stronger. So ideally, it would be best for you to consult with a physical therapist to set up a routine that would work for you.

The amount of food you are eating is so little that I’m thinking that your efforts are counterproductive because it has been slowing your metabolism. Also, I wonder if fluid retention is an issue for you. And I’m concerned about your nutritional status. Again, professional advice and support by someone who can do a full assessment would be extremely beneficial. See “Finding a Nutritionist” for some guidance.

Hopefully, you have insurance that will cover visits. But if finances are an issue for you, even a one-time consultation with these professionals will be a worthwhile investment in your health and well being. Just tell them upfront if your funds are limited.

I hope the best for you as you seek new direction!
